Catherine Millas

Catherine Millas was born Catherine Anton on September 9, 1932 in New York City. She was the only daughter and youngest of four children of Theodore Antonopoulos and Evangelia Argiropoulos Antonopoulos who immigrated to New York from Southena, Greece. Catherine passed away on April 23, 2021 after suffering a hemorrhagic stroke. She was a loving wife to her predeceased husband of 66 years, James Millas, and a dedicated and caring mother. She is survived by her children, Eva, Timi and Athena, and her grandchildren, Catherine and James. In 1950, Catherine graduated from Central Needle Trades High School in New York City, the predecessor to The Fashion Institute of Technology. She worked in the Garment District until she met James and married him in January of 1953. She was an expert seamstress and made all types of clothing for friends and family during the years that she raised her children. After her last child went to High School, Catherine worked for a few years at a Montgomery Ward catalogue store and then got a job at Country Trust Company in the check processing department. After taking over that department and later helping retail clients on the bank platform, she worked for the bank (now Wells Fargo) until she retired at 65 years old. She was well loved by her individual and small business customers. Catherine was instrumental in helping all her children and grandchildren to graduate college and get advanced degrees. She assisted them with their financial investments and was always willing to help anyone who needed her. Catherine was an avid reader and an expert at crossword puzzles and the game of Scrabble. She was a devoted member of St. John The Theologian Greek Orthodox Cathedral, volunteering to help in all their festivals. She was also a member of the choir for the last two years of her life after being in the choir as a teenager at her church in New York. She was devoted to her husband, James, and took care of him when he was ill at the end of his life. Her viewing will take place at Barrett Leber Funeral Home from 7-9 pm on Tuesday, April 27, and the funeral will be held at 10 am at St. John The Theologian Greek Orthodox Cathedral. In lieu of flowers, donations are asked to be made to St. John’s Cathedral.
