Alden Blackwell Sr Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Alden (Butch) Blair Blackwell, Sr., long time resident of Tenafly, NJ passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 30, 2022. Alden was a beloved father, father-in-law, brother, uncle, and grandfather. He was preceded in death by his wife and mother of his children, Brenda P. Blackwell in 2017, his brother Harold J. Blackwell, Jr., sister Gwendolyn Kiessel, and brother Harlan Blackwell. Alden is survived by his sister Theodora Stone and family, his son A. Blair Blackwell, Jr., daughter B. Michelle (Tom) Cilurso, granddaughter Harleigh Blackwell, and grandson Philip Wheehler. Alden was born, raised and made his home in Tenafly, NJ along with his whole line of grandparents, aunts/uncles, cousins, and siblings. He graduated from Tenafly High School in 1960 and continued his education at Pratt Institute where he studied Engineering Science. Alden was an E5 Defensive Missile Mechanic in the US Army from 1964-1967. Along with his father, uncles and brothers Alden became a member of the Tenafly Fire Department in 1977, serving as Assistant Chief December 1999 - December 2006. He was a Computer Engineer for Sperry/Univac/Unisys for many years before becoming a Fire Official in Englewood, then the Fire Official/Fire Sub Code Official in Tenafly and the Zoning Officer/Construction Code Official in Alpine. He was a member of the Association of Blauvelt Descendants, documented as arriving in this country from Holland in 1637 on the tall ship Kalmar Nyckle. In his limited spare time and few months of retirement, he enjoyed spending time on his sailboat. Visitation at the Barrett-Leber Funeral Home 148 Dean Dr Tenafly on Friday 4-8PM. Funeral Service Saturday 10AM at the funeral home. Interment to follow at Germonds Presbyterian Cemetery, New City, NY.
