David Anderson

Dave Anderson, Pulitzer Prize winning sports columnist of the New York Times, has died at the age of 89. Born in Troy, NY and raised in Brooklyn, Dave was a resident of Tenafly, NJ for over fifty-seven years and Cresskill for the last two years. Anderson won the Pulitzer in 1981 for distinguished commentary, was the 1994 winner of the Associated Press Sports Editors Red Smith Award and was inducted into the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Hall of Fame in 1990. In 2014 Anderson received The PEN/ESPN Lifetime Achievement Award for Literary Sportswriting. Anderson joined the Times in 1966 and wrote for the paper until 2007, when he retired. He continued to contribute to the Times with his most recent work in the newspaper's online archives. Prior to the Times, Anderson worked for the New York Journal-American and the Brooklyn Eagle. He authored 21 books during his career. Dave Anderson was married to Maureen (née Young) for 60 years before her passing in 2014. Dave is survived by his four children, sons Stephen (Rosanne) and Mark (Mary) and daughters, Mary Jo and Jean-Marie. He was the proud Pop Pop of four grandchildren, Matthew (Shima), David (Laylah), Christine, the late Michael Anderson and one great grandson Atlas Anderson. Oct. 10, 2018 at 10:00 am. Interment: Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Tenafly, NJ.
