Howard "Howie" Tiedemann

Howard “Howie” M. Tiedemann, 98, passed away Wednesday, December 8, 2021. Howard enlisted in the United States Navy for World War II in 1942 and was assigned to the U.S.S. Donnell, a Destroyer Escort for convoy duty in the North Atlantic. The ship in route to the Normandy Invasion got torpedoed on May 3, 1944, losing 30 men and injuring 29. The ship then floated adrift at sea, open to enemy attack for three days. After World War II, Howie continued to serve in his community, and joined the Cresskill Volunteer Fire Department in 1949. In August of 1950, he was recalled to active duty by the United States Navy for the Korean War, which he accepted on the U.S.S. Shannon. Howie received ribbons for the many campaigns he fought in and also received the Distinguished Service Medal from the State of New Jersey for serving his country for more than eight years. In 1951, he returned to Cresskill. Howard married Virginia M. Tiedemann whose family roots go back in Cresskill to 1917. Howard is survived by his daughter, Linda her husband Cliff, his son Roger his wife Terri, and his two granddaughters. Howie has always been committed to serving his country through his military service and in his community. He was a member of the Cresskill Volunteer Fire Department for over 70 years; a Life Member of the NY/NJ Fire Assoc.; member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, the Tin Can Sailors Association, and the Destroyer Escort Association. In 1999, the Bergen County Executive, William Pat Schumer, declared April 24th to be Howard “HOWIE” Tiedemann Day in Bergen County, NJ. Howie lived a happy, and fulfilling life always humble, with humor, and lending a hand to everyone. Viewing will be at Barrett/Leber Funeral Home, 148 Dean Dr., Tenafly, NJ, on Sunday, December 11, 2021 from 2 pm-6 pm. Interment will be private.
