Richard J McGovern Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Richard J. McGovern, aka Haystacks, of Dumont, NJ passed away on Friday, February 1, 2019. He is survived by his brothers Jerry and Jimmy, Jerry’s wife Maria, their daughter Cassie, and his beloved dog Stax. Virginia, his wife of 25 years, passed away in March of 2015. Rich was born on July 26, 1957 in Hackensack Hospital to the proud parents of Margaret and Elmer (Mac) McGovern. They resided in New Milford, NJ. Shortly thereafter the family moved to a newly constructed home in Closter, NJ. Mac, along with local tradesmen, built their new residence. With the support of his wonderful Mom and Dad, Rich developed a love for the game of baseball. He was an outstanding hitter, having played 3 years of varsity baseball for Northern Valley Regional HS, Demarest. He went on to play 4 years of college ball and graduated with a B.A. in Liberal Arts from St. Leo University in St. Leo, FL. After his college years, Rich continued hitting the round-ball; however, this time it was a passion for softball. He played on several teams in different leagues, but he most enjoyed his time playing for Payton Elevator where he cultivated many great friendships. He also developed a love for fishing. Whether it was deep saltwater, lake, stream, reservoir or ice, he’d be the first to grab his fishing rod and his oversized cooler. You might even find a Bud or two on ice! Rich worked in the construction industry for the past 30 years. Most recently, he worked for Local Union 79 where he was part of the rebuild of the World Trade Center complex, now known as the Freedom Tower. He often spoke highly of the many friends he made working in the industry. He was very thankful for all the thoughts, prayers and generosity he received from his co-workers and friends as he battled through his health issues. Rich will always be remembered for his contagious laugh, welcoming smile and his many friendships. When you walked into his house the first thing you would hear is “grab a beer and sit down!” We shall all miss those heartfelt words, but the many fond memories will last forever. He will truly be missed. God speed to our good friend Haystacks!
