Scott Gabriel Hakim
May 5, 2022
Scott Gabriel Hakim, 32 – beloved son, brother, uncle, cousin, friend, and Marine – died unexpectedly on Thursday May 5th. Scott was born on May 11th, 1989 to Gerald Hakim and Susan Hausmann Hakim; he was raised in River Vale and most recently resided in Jersey City, NJ. Scott attended St. John’s Academy in Hillsdale, NJ, followed by St. Joseph’s Regional High School. At age 18, upon his high school graduation, he enlisted in the Marines and was stationed out of Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. He served tours of duty in both Iraq and Afghanistan, earning a Purple Heart and attaining the rank of Corporal. After his military service, he used the GI bill to graduate from both Rutgers University (undergraduate) and Berkley School of Law. His professional career was dedicated to providing legal representation for those who could not afford it and outreach to other veterans. Scott’s life was characterized by love for his family and friends, service to others and his country, an unquenchable thirst for knowledge, and the unreplicated ability to bring a smile to everyone’s face. His presence was a present. Although he wore many hats in his life, the role that came most natural to him (and was arguably his favorite) was of Uncle. He sacrificed a significant portion of his health to his time in active duty, and unfortunately dealt with chronic pain from combat-related conditions for the last five years of his life. Scott is survived by his father, Gerald Hakim, of Toms River; his sister Sharon Johnson-Hakim (Matthew) of Denville; and his brothers Greg (Hannah) and Sean (Kayla), both of Boston. He leaves behind four small humans who adored him as the always-playful “Uncle ‘Cotty” – Brahm, Basil, Quentin, and Aurora. He is also survived by a loving circle of aunts and uncles, cousins, friends, and fellow Marines. He is predeceased by his mother, Susan Hausmann Hakim, his niece, Rain Johnson-Hakim, all four of his grandparents, and several brother Marines. Friends and Family can pay their respects at St. Anthony’s Orthodox Church in Bergenfield, NJ: visitation from 4-8pm on Thursday and funeral on Friday at 9:30am. The funeral will be followed by a military send-off and a celebration of life. If you would like to make a charitable contribution in Scott’s name, Special Olympics of PA was near and dear to his heart. https://specialolympicspa.org/ May his memory be eternal.
