Charles "Charlie" H Dean

Charles H. Dean Jr., known to all as "Charlie," passed away peacefully on January 7, 2025, at the age of 88, surrounded by his loving family. Born on October 22, 1936, Charlie spent a lifetime dedicated to his family, his community, and the many friends he made along the way. Charlie was a graduate of Dumont High School and went on to serve his country as a member of the U.S. Navy. After his service, he embarked on a career as a letter carrier in Dumont, NJ, a position he held for over 40 years. As a long time resident of Cresskill, he continued his commitment to community service by working as a crossing guard for the Borough of Cresskill. His kindness extended to the four-legged members of his community, as he was especially fond of the dogs he met during his time as a crossing guard. Charlie's passion for sports and his deep ties to his community were evident in his long-time role as an official scorer for the Cresskill High School sports teams. His contributions were recognized with a well-deserved induction into the Cresskill High School Hall of Fame in 2018. Charlie was predeceased by his beloved wife of 55 years, Seraphina "Fina," whose memory he cherished throughout his life. He leaves behind his sons, Chuck and Kevin, and their wives, Colleen and Corrie. He was the proud grandfather of Meghan, Evan, and Nathan, who lovingly knew him as Pop-Pop, and is survived by his brother, Douglas, his wife, Linda, as well as his in-laws Gloria, Barbara and Nick. Known for his quick and dry wit, Charlie never sought the spotlight but always brought a smile to those around him. Many will fondly remember him sitting on his favorite stool at the Dumont Crystal Diner, sharing laughs and stories with Lou and his friends. Visitation hours will be on Monday, January 13th from 4:00PM - 7:00PM at Barrett Leber Funeral Home, 148 Dean St, Tenafly, NJ. A service to celebrate Charlie's life will be held on Tuesday, January 14th from 10:00AM - 11:00AM at the Barrett Leber Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to the ASPCA or NVNA and Hospice Charitable Fund in Charlie's honor. Charlie's warmth, humor, and dedication to his community will be deeply missed but lovingly remembered by all who knew him.
