Mary C Buchanan

Mary C. Buchanan passed away on March 29, 2025. She was the beloved daughter of William H. (Harry) and Mary F. Buchanan. Born on November 24,1944 in the Bronx, NY, she shared a happy childhood there with her parents and favorite aunt, Margaret Buchanan. Always a fan of baseball, she enjoyed listening to it on the radio or watching it on television. You would think being from the Bronx, she would be a fan of the other local baseball team. Instead, she chose to follow the Dodgers and, after they moved to California, the New York Mets. After many years of never-losing faith, she was ecstatic when they won the World Series! After graduation, she began her career as an editorial assistant for several publishing companies in New York City, including, McGraw Hill, and most recently Wolters Kluwer. Her shorthand skills were the envy of many. Throughout her personal and professional life, she continued to use that shorthand proficiency to write lists, take notes, and track reminders to herself. Over forty years ago, Mary left the Bronx and moved across the river to the "country", aka Tenafly, NJ. She never regretted that decision. Mary quickly adapted to country life and eventually learned how to drive so she could venture beyond town. On her daily commute to and from the city, many of her fellow bus passengers became friends. Mary's friendly smile and charming manner were hard to resist. Mary's faith was very, very strong. She had unwavering faith in St. Anthony and took comfort in praying the rosary daily. Having grown up in a Carmelite parish in the Bronx--St. Simon Stock Church, she found herself right at home with the Carmelite priests of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Tenafly. Mary was encouraged to become the church sacristan many years ago and was both diligent and conscientious in fulfilling her duties. Mary loved sweets! She loved her friends. She loved animals. She always looked forward to getting together with her McGraw Hill friends for lunch and chit-chat. She was a huge fan of 50s music and especially enjoyed listening to Cousin Brucie whenever she could catch him on the radio. The OLMC church community will miss seeing her in the same pew/same seat at Mass--always arriving at the same time, like clockwork. She will be missed by many who didn't even know her name but recognized her because she was as steady as a rock--you could always count on her being there. Rest in peace, Mary.
